Verder niet zoveel commentaar bij deze foto.

Waterval

Een waterval in, alweer, het zwarte woud. Een heel lieflijk klein watervalletje, zomaar in het bos. Je kon er langs lopen via een houten vlonder. In een aantal etappes viel het water naar beneden, erg mooi.

Deze 'falls' lagen wel vrij afgelegen, je moest dus wel enige moeite doen om er te komen. Hoe komt het toch, dat water zo'n indruk maakt? Je kunt er uren naar staren en het verveelt nooit.

Even iets technisch  over de camera, een automaatje. Er is geen mogelijkheid de sluitertijden te regelen, wanneer ik bij water een langzame sluitertijd zou willen gebruiken (wat kan bij een spiegelreflex) om dat fluwelen effect te krijgen kan dat dus niet. Er moet toch een manier zijn om dat ook bij een automaat te realiseren? Weet iemand at misschien? Wat gebeurt er wanneer je in zo'n situatue de modus 'nachtopname' gebruikt? Die zal automatisch een langere sluitertijd aanhouden, zou dat werken? Ik ga het in ieder geval eens proberen.

Kerken in het Zwarte Woud

Zowel van de kerk in St. Peter als die van Sant Blasien een paar opnames. Goed is het verschil te zien midden en links en rechts - barok en neoclassicisme (druk en uitgebalanceerd).

Sankt Blasien

Sankt Blasien is beroemd geworden door zijn dom. De koepel daarvan is een van de grootste van Europa en is naar het voorbeeld van het Pantheon in Rome gevormd. De dom is in barokstijl gebouwd, alhoewel je ook neoclassicistische elementen tegenkomt. En dan met name de strakke, symmetrische lay-out van het gebouw. Om eerlijk te zijn, vind ik het geheel eerder neoclassicistisch dan barok. Over alle maten, lengtes en vormen is nagedacht, niets werd aan het toeval overgelaten. En dat wijst veel meer op een teruggrijpen op de klassieke oudheid dan op iets anders. Ook dit klooster heeft een lange geschiedenis. De huidige abdijkerk werd in de tweede helft van de achttiende eeuw herbouwd door de architect Pierre Michel d'Ixnard, nadat de oude door brand (1768) verwoest was. De koepel meet 46 meter in doorsnee en is 63 meter hoog. Sankt Blasien telt slechts een kleine 4000 inwoners, is dus niet bepaald groot, maar herbergt toch zo'n prachtige kerk. Het is een toeristisch stadje en ligt een 10 km van Bernau, onze verblijfplaats. Van daaruit maakten we het Zwarte Woud onveilig in de week, dat we er zaten. Een ideale uitvalsbasis.

St. Peter

St. Peter in het Zwarte Woud. Er staat daar een prachtige kerk, in barokstijl gebouwd. De kerk stamt uit de eerste helft van de achttiende eeuw en is ontworpen door architect Peter Thumb. Het maakt onderdeel uit van een Benedictijner klooster. Een kloostercomplex eigenlijk, dat teruggaat tot de twaalfde eeuw. De stichting van een klooster was in die tijd vaak een kwestie van politiek, van macht. Verschillende keren in zijn lange bestaan werd het klooster vernietigd. Zoals gezegd, herbouwd in de barokstijl. Het resultaat mag er zijn, je kijkt je ogen uit, zo druk (maar mooi) versierd is het. Het is overigens nog steeds een klooster(kerk), maar er op vaste basis wonen er slechts (ongeveer) tien kloosterlingen. Naast de kerk is er ook nog een prachtige bibliotheek (rococo) en een vorstenzaal. Deze laatste was bedoeld voor ontvangsten van belangrijke gasten. Alles druk versierd met plafondschilderingen, beelden, krullen, bladgoud,  enzovoort. Maar, zeer de moeite waard. Moeilijk te fotograferen, dat wel. Hier heb ik me geconcentreerd op het plafond van de kerk (prachtig beschilderd) zodat je de rest wat minder goed ziet. Genomen met het automaatje van Panasonic, die het toch wel erg goed doet. Alles ook met natuurlijk licht, ik flits nooit.

De Alpen

Net in het Zwarte Woud geweest. Een mooi, heuvelachtig stukje van Duitsland. Het ligt in het zuiden van Duitsland, zeg maar rechts van de Rijn, links daarvan liggen de Vogezen in Frankrijk. De hoogste berg in het Zwarte Woud is de Feldberg - net geen 1500 meter hoog. Goed te beklimmen, waarbij ik moet opmerken, dat je met de auto een paar honderd meter van de top kunt komen. De rest kun je ook nog eens met een kabelbaan doen als je lui bent aangelegd. Als het mooi weer is heb je een fantastisch overzicht over het omringende landschap. En daar ging het mij hier om. Je ziet de Vogezen, maar ook de Alpen in de verte. Met de eeuwige sneeuw. De Alpen, die je ziet, liggen in Zwitserland op 50 kilometer afstand en dat is best ver. Zoals al gezegd is de Feldberg net geen 1500 meter hoog, de Alpen waar je naar kijkt zijn ongeveer 2000 meter hoger. De foto (Panasonic Lumix automaat) laat mooi het verte perspectief zien, waardoor alles vervaagt naarmate het verder weg ligt. Prachtig. Het gebied is een echt wandelgebied. Maar ook (in de winter) kun je er skieen, mountainbiken, parapenten en zijn er een aantal grote meren voor de watersport. Erg de moeite waard dus.

Carpe diem. Again.

One of my earliest postings. I just feel like posting it again, because it holds so much truth. Besides, I seem to be  forgetting it myself.  "Carpe diem, or seize the day. Life is short. It’s something you realize when you lose somebody close to you. Then it hits home hardest. Most of the time you live your life not really conscious of the fact that life ends at a certain time. Deep down you know it of course, you just don’t want to think about it. It’s a fact of life. Carpe diem in my view means, that you should live your life to the fullest, every day can be your last. It doesn’t necessarily mean, that you have to indulge your every wish, you have to be responsible too, you have to be compassionate.  Above all you have to enjoy  life. Every day again. It also doesn’t mean you have to quit your job and just do the fun stuff. Care about people around you and care about yourself. Don’t let life pass you by, you are the one that holds the reigns. Be prepared to say no at times when it conflicts with your own interests. You’ve only got this one life, you know. Use it well."

Beauty / Schoonheid

• The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason.
• The ability to see beauty is the beginning of our moral sensibility. What we believe is beautiful we will not wantonly destroy.
• People often say that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder,' and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.
• I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep. That's deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas?

Detail van dezelfde steen. Maar dan door een kaleidoscoopfilter bekeken en daarna een eyecandy glass filter toegepast. Ook wel leuk, een totaal ander effect, dat wel. Ik hou van het kaleidoscoop filter in Paint Shop Pro. Die gooit de boel zo heerlijk door elkaar en maakt foto's en afbeeldingen onherkenbaar. En je kunt daarbinnen nog ontelbaar veel instellingen aanpassen.

Mooi Gelderland

Wat is Gelderland toch mooi. Vlak bij ons op een fietstochtje troffen we dit veld met "onkruid" aan. Je moet er niet je paarden in laten lopen, want het is giftig.
Maar om naar te kijken is prachtig.
Heb er dan ook een aantal plaatjes van geschoten. Met de nieuwe Panasonic, die ik steeds meer waardeer. Deze vond ik de leukste.Verder  commentaar overbodig.

Bezuinigingen Provincie Gelderland
Citaat 1: "Het college van Gedeputeerde Staten heeft de bezuinigingsnotitie vastgesteld. Er wordt voorgesteld om € 3 miljoen te bezuinigen op het bibliotheekwerk in Gelderland. Het totale bibliotheekbudget is € 8,5 miljoen. Voor Biblioservice komt de bezuiniging neer op € 1,5 miljoen (23%). De WSF subsidie van Bibliotheek Arnhem wordt met de helft ingekrompen. Fractal: Blauw, geel, zwart

Oude kerkje in Oosterbeek

Het oude kerkje in Oosterbeek, tevens het oudste kerkje van Nederland, is in de verte tbewonderen. Op de voorgrond een veld met paardebloemen. Een gele zee. De foto is genomen in de telestand waardoor alles wat 'op elkaar' wordt gedrukt. Het levert wel een spectaculair plaatje op. De kerk werd in de tweede wereldoorlog zwaar beschadigd tijdens de luchtlandingen in september 1944. Het doel van die landingen was de bruggen bij Arnhem te veroveren. zodat de doortocht naar Noord-Nederland open zou liggen voor de geallieerden. Het bleek een 'brug te ver' te zijn, waardoor de oorlog nog tot mei 1945 duurde. Elk jaar worden deze 'mislukte' luchtlandingen herdacht. De airborne wandeltocht , de eerste zaterdag in september, voert de wandelaars o.a. langs deze kerk.

De Blaauwe Kamer
We waren weer eens op de Blaauwe Kamer. Waar we ooit woonden en heel veel rond gelopen hebben, was het nu jaren geleden, dat we dit rondje weer eens deden. Prachtig, en ook het weer werkte aardig mee.
Wat je op de foto ziet zul je echter niet in het echt tegenkomen. Ik ben zwaar aan het bewerken geslagen. De berken heb ik "gemaakt", er stonden wel bomen, maar daar heb ik berken van gemaakt, waardoor ze wat beter uitkomen. Over de rest heb ik een filter gehaald, nadat ik het contrast wat vergroot had.
Prachtig, zoals al gezegd, behalve aalscholvers en ooievaars kom je er tegenwoordig ook lepelaars tegen. En dat laatste was nieuw voor mij. Ga daar zeker nog eens kijken, vooral omdat het relatief zo dichtbij is.

De trein
De trein. De trein stond in Amsterdam en werd gefotografeerd met mijn nieuwe Panasonic Lumix camera. Daarna heb ik de foto ietsje bewerkt, er een "radiant" filter overheen gehaald. Daardoor werd het contrast tussen het vrij zwart-witte station en de gekleurde trein wat versterkt. Ik vind zelf het resultaat wel geslaagd. De Lumix heeft een groothoek van 25 mm, maar ook een tele van 300 mm, een groot bereik dus. Maar daarom erg handig, snel en veelzijdig in het gebruik. Er zit een Leica lensje op, dat prachtige beelden kan maken. Het cameraatje is ook erg compact, en daarom heb ik het vrij vaak bij me. Voor die onverwachte situaties, die je altijd weer tegenkomt.

Fractals Geel/Blauw

Zuid-Limburg
Inmiddels al weer bijna 2 weken geleden, dat we in Zuid-Limburg verbleven. Wat was het daar mooi en wat is Limburg toch fotogeniek. Voor het eerst heb ik mijn nieuwe compact camera gebruikt. Een Panasonic Lumix met Leica lensje. Hij doet eigenlijk alles automatisch en dat is niet erg. Want, zo af en toe ben ik een erg luie fotograaf en wil ik niet klooien met allemaal instellingen. Ook is zo'n klein cameraatje erg handig op wandeltochten of wanneer je gaat fietsen. Het past in een binnenzak en je merkt het bijna niet. Dit zijn de eerste resultaten en ik zal zeker nog wat meer van Limburg laten zien.

ShapeCollage
ShapeCollage is a nice little program which you can download for free. It makes all kinds of collages. The options are almost endless, certainly in combination with PaintShopPro or Photoshop. The collage you see here is in the shape of a map of the world, the pictures which were used for the collage were made a couple of years ago during a vacation in England. Apart from a set of predefined shapes you can also design your own. Just give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

French castle
A french castle (one of the many to be found there) we visited two years ago. Somewhere in Normandy.
It had lots of wild flowers in front of it. And all kinds of sculptures. Sjoerd and I toured the outer premises, Margot and Imme took the tour inside the castle. Which to us was a bit too lengthy, and kind of boring. I don't think we missed much.
Margot and I really made up for this castle the year after, when we visited a couple of (beautiful) castles in the Loire region. Chambord and Chenonceau are highly recommended.

Church in Oosterbeek
The church in Oosterbeek has withstood history for hundreds of years. Including the second world war. And, as you can see, it's still standing.
It is a remarkable little building. Every time I walk or bike past this church I am tempted to make pictures.
This one was taken yesterday during a hike we made. The night before it had snowed again, which always creates a special atmosphere, a special mood. I made this picture with my Nikon Coolpix 4500 - that is a compact camera of maybe 6 years old. But despite it's age it is still capable of taking good pictures. And, it is a very versatile little camera.

No, this really is how it looked. Didn't do anything to the picture apart from resizing.

Beeld en Geluid
I made this strip today. Used a picture I once took inside the Institute for Beeld en Geluid (Movie and Sound) in Hilversum. I used it as a starting point for playing with in Paint Shop Pro. Applied the Redfield - Lattice composerfilter. Even with those filters you can achieve quite different effects as you can see. In the middle you see the original, the other two images are still recognizable I think. It turned out as a colorful composition indeed.

Church
The starting point for this image were churchwindows. It's already a couple of years ago that I took this picture. When you look really hard you can still see remnants of windows. Now, looking back, I can't tell anymore what exactly I did to the picture. I used Paint Shop Pro and a lot of filters, that I know. This is what I finally ended up with. Hope you'll like it.

Fog
I took this picture yesterday during a bike trip we made. The snows were gone by then and it suddenly looked like it was fall - it was kinda foggy which created this moody atmosphere. How quick weather changes. The only thing I did was using a "radiant filter" in Paint Shop Pro to enhance the fog effect a little. Hope you'll like it, enjoy!

The snow hit us hard

As you can see. Didn't have time to save the bike and put it inside. Too bad. By the way, the bike survived and afterwards was even in a state to be used again. We've seen worse.

Fall revisited
The last fall picture I want to show you this year. It was taken in our garden. Every year I'm photographing this little tree (it doesn't reach any higher than a couple of meters). But, what it lacks in size it makes up in appearance. In the fall it's standing there showing off it's bright red, flaming leaves. It's just gorgeous, I can't get enough of it.

Fall 2009
Fall is over its peak now. Trees are losing there leaves fast. Because of the rain and the wind. The picture you see here was taken two weeks ago when the sun was still shining. It looked like pure gold to me. You're maybe wondering what I did to make those leaves shine like gold? Actually, nothing. Sometimes I use Paint Shop Pro to enhance contrast or saturation, but not in this case. Only thing is I framed the photo. Enjoy!

Castles in the Air?
Castles, castles and more castles. When you go the river Loire(France) and surroundings you will bump against castles every 10 kilometres. Here you see Chateau Chambord from the outside and the inside. Also Chateau Chenonceau, a beautiful castle built over the river. It has a wonderful garden as well. The stairs of Chambord are said to be developed by Leonardo da Vinci who lived the last years of his life here in France. Enjoy.

Update
It's been a long time since I posted to this blog. Have been busy at work, writing for another blog and doing a lot of other stuff related to the web. Never mind though, I promise I will be more faithfull and diligent and really try and do my best. Since June (my last posting) we've been on vacation to France. We biked along the river Loire and saw a lot of beautiful castles. Also visited Paris and the Champagne region and the coast. Took a lot of pictures. One of the castles we visited was Chateau Chambord, a huge castle. And as far as I'm concerned the most beautiful castle we saw. One of these days I will show you more pictures of castles. Hope you'll like this one. By the way, it's been taken with my Olympus DSLR camera.

Vacation in France
A picture I took last summer vacation. We were camping in France, Normandy to be precise.
This is the coast that's been painted a million times by painters like Monet. They knew what to paint, they knew beauty when they saw it. Take a look for yourself.
It's taken near Etretat with my Olympus DSLR camera. I used a normal zoomlens, 14 - 42 mm. I must say it produces brilliant results so I'm very satisfied with it.

Exile on Main St.
Probably the best album of one of Rock and Roll's greatest bands, The Rolling Stones. The album was released in 1972, and initially wasn't met with lots of praise. But slowly over time it's quality was recognized. It takes time to get used to the songs on this album, to appreciate them, but the more you listen to them, the more you see how masterful and basically how "Rolling Stones" this album is. Rock and roll, blues, country, soul, it's all to be found here. It also happens to be the last recording of the Stones with Mick Taylor on guitar. I used to think the older albums were better, not so anymore. I've finally come to the conclusion that Exile on Main St. is the quintessential Rolling Stones album. Favorite songs? Hard to say. A few of my favorites are "Torn and Frayed", "Loving cup" and "Turd on the run". If you really want to get to know the Stones, then you should listen to this album. Highly recommended.

Spring, definitely spring
It's been awhile since I last posted. Too much to do. Had a couple of nice days this week. Temperatures are rising and the sun is shining. And everywhere you see blossoming trees and flowers. It's such a nice time of the year if you ask me. Probably my favorite time. Good for biking and taking pictures, two of my favorite pastimes. Here you see a composite of three pictures I took ( taken with the Olympus E 410) last week in our garden. Speaking of our garden, I really should mow the lawn, although I think it's a better idea first to sit in the garden for a while.

Blauwe Kamer
Just visited the Blauwe Kamer today. It's where I used to live. It was beautiful, the weather was really nice. Everywhere you can see spring nearing. Of course I couldn't resist to take a few pictures. The images you see here were taken with my digital Olympus (E 410 DSLR), and I used Paint Shop Pro to make this strip. Hope you'll like it.

Hugh Sloan Wilson
Not too long ago I read a book written by Hugh Sloan Wilson. It was called: Evolution for everyone. Appropriate and fitting in this Darwin year. It was an eye-opening book for me. In it Mr. Wilson describes and explains what evolution is. He points out that the recipe for evolution is actually very simple. Not only that, it can also provide you with explanations in other scientific disciplines than biology. Ask yourself, why an animal behaves the way it does. Does that behaviour have an evolutionary compound? So, was it beneficial for its survival in the past? The same goes for human behaviour and even culture, try to see it in an "evolutionary way" and a lot of incomprehensible and amazing things can be explained. He proves his point with many examples. The book reads like a novel and I can absolutely recommend it. Yesterday I read an article about religion and evolution. Here on Noorderlicht, and here on RichardDawkins.net. Quote: "Scientists say they have located the parts of the brain that control religious faith. And the research proves, they contend, that belief in a higher power is an evolutionary asset that helps human survival." That's a fascinating thought and puts religion in a whole new perspective. I had already read this in Mr. Wilson's book and to me it seemed very plausible. Another quote: "When we have incomplete knowledge of the world around us, it offers us the opportunities to believe in God. When we don't have a scientific explanation for something, we tend to rely on supernatural explanations," said Professor Grafman, who believes in God. "Maybe obeying supernatural forces that we had no knowledge of made it easier for religious forms of belief to emerge." Anyway, this makes interesting reading, I think.

Vase
I made this vase with Paint Shop Pro and I think the Sinedots filter. I'm not completely sure though. The creative process is often one of trial and error - I just do things, change settings and see what comes out. If I like the result I save the image, or try another filter. That's the way I work. Hope you'll like it too.

Happiness

Simple. Look for a wall with graffiti. Take photographs. Go home. Import your images in Paint Shop Pro XI. Resize the images, use the caleidoscope filter and play a little with the settings. There you go, the results are amazing, at least they surprise me every time again. Here I used three separate images to make one. Enjoy!

Ultra Fractal, PSP, Blade Pro

2009: The Year of......
For the Chinese 2009 is the year of ox, but it's also the year of science and it is astronomy year. Don't forget Darwin (I should have started with Darwin because 2009 is rightfully his year, his impact and ideas deserve it to be commemorated and honored) and Calvin. For many more things 2009 is the year. For music lovers 2009 is the year of "Tommy", the first ever rock opera. Tommy , a double album by the Who, was first released may 23, 1969. So 40 years ago. Reviews at the time of release were mixed. Nowadays it's considered a masterpiece. It elevated the Who to stardom and really made their name and fame. Quote: "In 1998 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for "historical, artistic and significant" value." If you want to know all about Tommy, take a look here at Wikipedia, they have a large piece on it, its history, chronology, an analysis, recoginition and stuff like that. Right now I'm listening to Tommy. And every time again I'm amazed by the beauty of the music. It's not much of a story, but heck, most opera's are thin in that department, but the music...........it's awesome. Through the history Tommy has been staged by several (opera) orchestras, a movie has been made, a musical, and now Di-rect, a Dutch band is performing Tommy, in a dutch translation, in theatres in Holland. So, all you people who up until now have been missing out on Tommy, it's getting time for you to right that omission.

UltraFractal
UltraFractal is a software program which enables you to make fractals. Together with FractalExplorer they are the two programs I always use to create fractals.
Combined with Paint Shop Pro they offer endless creative possibilities. Throw in a few plugins and filters and the results can be just awesome.
The other day I was playing with UF and PSP and came up with what I call "a jewel". You may also call this abstract, I don't mind. Hope you'll like it.
